Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. to Build Vermont’s Largest Solar Power Array

WATERBURY, Vt.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--One Vermont business has taken its environmental commitment to a new level—all the way to the roof!

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) will build Vermont’s largest solar array on top of the distribution center of its Green Mountain Coffee facility in Waterbury. Construction of the 100 kW photovoltaic array is expected to begin in the spring of 2009 and be completed by summer.

The solar array is the result of an innovative partnership between the coffee company, the State of Vermont, Green Mountain Power, and groSolar, North America’s premier provider of solar energy solutions. The electricity generated by the approximately 530 solar panels will produce a small percentage of the total electricity Green Mountain Coffee needs for its production facilities in Waterbury. Company officials say the greater benefit is in showing what is possible for the future.

“Renewable energy must be a part of our overall energy strategy,” says Paul Comey, Vice President of Environmental Affairs for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. “We want to show our state and federal governments that solar energy works, and that we need a policy that provides a broad-reaching structure for renewable energy.”

The array will produce its power during the day, when Green Mountain Power needs it most. Solar power offers a unique value to the electric grid, as most of the power is generated during hot summer days, when the system is strained and other sources are expensive. GMCR will benefit from Green Mountain Power’s groundbreaking SolarGMP program, which provides financial incentives to its customers to install solar generation at their homes and businesses.

“We\'re excited to help one of our largest customers embrace solar generation in a meaningful way,” says Mary Powell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Mountain Power. “We believe solar power will play an important role in Vermont\'s energy future. By working with GMCR on this project, and by creating SolarGMP, we hope to encourage more solar generation in Vermont. We expect other customers will follow soon.”

groSolar was selected to design and install the solar arrays at Green Mountain Coffee. As one of the largest solar installation companies in the US, groSolar is dedicated to energy independence and fighting global warming. CEO Jeff Wolfe says Vermont’s tax incentives for commercial solar systems, coupled with grants from the Vermont Department of Public Service’s Clean Energy Development Fund and Green Mountain Power, made the economics of the system very attractive. “Vermont has a great solar resource and great incentives for commercial solar energy. Green Mountain Power, GMCR, Vermont’s Department of Public Service, and groSolar have shown that solar will be part of Vermont’s energy solution,” he says.

"We are very pleased to see this solar installation become a reality,” says David O’Brien, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Public Service. “Governor Douglas places a high value on commercial-level solar applications. We commend GMCR for taking this step."

Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

By Tomira L. Rosser

Those with discerning coffee tastes can truly appreciate a cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. Known as the 'Grand Dame of Coffees' and the 'Java of Kings', Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is sweet and clean, full-bodied and intensely aromatic.

Grown on the rough and rugged Blue Mountains in Jamaica, Blue Mountain coffee has been a select and elite coffee for over two centuries. It's unique and rich flavor is also the reason it is a rare and sought after blend. In order to achieve its superiority to other coffees, Jamaican Blue Mountain is grown at higher elevations than other coffees in the world. The Blue Mountains climb to over 7,400 feet, and their drainage, rainfall, rich soil, and cool climate produce an extremely smooth and rich coffee.

Because of the region where it is grown, Jamaican Blue Mountain is not mass produced. The low sales volumes certainly have little to do with flavor, as coffee lovers for years have boasted about this prestigious label. The lower sales level is credited to the cost of the coffee. You see, Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is grown in rugged conditions under very strict supervision and guidelines which are closely guarded throughout the process. Only coffee approved and tested to meet the high-quality standards of the Jamaican Coffee Industry Board can be certified as Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

In order to achieve the full, yet delicate, flavors and aroma of this exclusive blend, a combination of the climate and soil of the Blue Mountain region produces a coffee cherry which stays on the tree three to four months longer than average coffees. This allows the bean to slowly ripen and grow, producing a truer, richer flavor than average coffees. Jamaican Blue Mountain roast is also one of the freshest coffees in the universe. Its low production volumes ensure that each batch is shipped at it's freshest - in either green or roasted form.

Those who are lucky enough to savor the flavor of true Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, can easily identify it as a choice coffee fit for a king. Buyers of the whole bean can also identify the prestigious blend by its signature wooden barrels, complete with certification and stamp of approval only earned by true Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

Blue Mountain Coffee - Jamaica's Finest Export

By Jeff Plante

Towards the eastern end of the beautiful island of Jamaica lies the majestic Blue Mountains. It is here in these mountains that some of the finest coffee beans in the world are grown. Blue Mountain coffee beans are so valuable that their cultivation is strictly protected by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica.

With elevations up to 7500 feet, the Blue Mountains are among the tallest mountains in all of the Caribbean islands. The climate here is cool and moist, ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. The soil is especially rich and porous, so it drains extremely well. These rainforest like conditions produce the fantastic Blue Mountain coffee that is coveted worldwide.

So what is so special about this coffee from Jamaica's Blue Mountains? Most people say its the smooth taste, rich body, incredible aroma, and pleasant after taste. It also has a reputation for having very little bitterness. This is a coffee sure to please even the most particular coffee connoisseurs. Because of the rainforest like conditions of the Blue Mountains, the coffee cherries are allowed to ripen very slowly and thus, fully develop their exquisite taste characteristics.

Coffee grown in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica is protected as a trademark worldwide. What this means is that only coffee certified by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica can be labeled as Blue Mountain Coffee. Therefore, it must actually be grown in the Blue Mountains and up to a certain level of standard established by the board.

These measures are in place to assure consumers that coffee beans in other areas of Jamaica are not called Blue Mountain Coffee for marketing purposes. The Coffee Industry Board's mission is to protect the lofty reputation of this incredible coffee for years to come.

What is Green Mountain Coffee?

Pick the best coffee beans available all over the world, roast them to perfection, season with an advanced social conscience and a mission to help change the world, flavor with a very savvy sense of marketing and business and you might end up with one of the most successful specialty coffee businesses in the world. Ask the founders of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, the specialty coffee business that started as a small café in Waterbury, Vermont back in 1981 and recorded nearly $350 million in sales in fiscal 2007.

The road to success for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has been a series of excellent business decisions coupled with right-place-right-time social policies. The Green Mountain label stands for excellent coffee combined with a mission to make a difference in the world. That mission imbues everything that the company does, from sourcing their coffees to point of sale and beyond - the company even uses recycled/recyclable packaging materials. Mission and social responsibility aside, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters owes its success to one factor - the amazing flavor.

The Green Mountain brand is built on high quality specialty coffees. The company began as a small café in Vermont, with a commitment to serving specialty coffees roasted on premises. It wasn't long before restaurants and shops in town started asking to serve Green Mountain's coffee. When skiers who had tried Green Mountain's specialty coffees while on vacation started asking if they could order coffee and have it sent to their homes, the company added its mail order business, and things just grew from there. These days, you can buy Green Mountain Roasters specialty coffees in your supermarket or order it online, sign up for Café Express to have Green Mountain coffee delivered to you automatically, drink Green Mountain coffee at many of your favorite restaurants, and buy Green Mountain coffee pre-packed into Keurig K-cups - Green Mountain sells the most varieties of coffees in K-cups of any of the Keurig partners.

The connection with Keurig is not the first strategic market placement decision that's paid off for Green Mountain. Many avid fans got their first taste of Green Mountain's specialty roasts at a most unexpected place - local convenience stores like 7-11 and Store 24, Gas-n-Go shops and other on-the-run coffee pickup spots where the last thing you expect is excellent coffee. As the various convenience stores have expanded their repertoire to include self-service coffee bars - and the technology for making good coffee has improved - Green Mountain has often been the coffee served.

Who Is Green Mountain Coffee Roasters?

Why not ask the company themselves? According to their press releases:

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters was ranked No. 1 on the list of "100 Best Corporate Citizens" in 2006 and 2007, and has been recognized repeatedly by Forbes, Fortune Small Business, and the Society of Human Resource Management as an innovative, high-growth, socially responsible company.

Is the coffee really as good as all that? With the fastest growing sales in the industry, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters stands by quality as a watchword. They send coffee sourcers throughout the world to taste and test the crops at coffee plantations in Africa, Asia and South America, bringing back the best that they find. Unlike the biggest chains that must be able to buy in large enough volume to supply hundreds or thousands of stores with any variety they choose, Green Mountain has no issues with selling limited edition coffees, often as single origin coffees.

Green Mountain Coffee Sourcing

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is also popular with "socially conscious" consumers who love the company's environmentally and community-friendly policies. The company makes every attempt to source directly from growers around the world, and is one of the leading buyers in the Fair Trade coffee market. Green Mountain buyers work directly with coffee growers whenever possible. It is their commitment to high quality coffee and improving the world that has spurred the roasting company's success.

Favorite Green Mountain Coffee Blends

If you've never tried Green Mountain Coffee, one of the best ways to get a real feel for the brand's variety of flavors is to order one of the company's variety samplers. If you'd rather pick and choose your own sampler pack, here's a list of all-time favorite Green Mountain Coffee Blends.

Breakfast Blend - The #1 all time favorite and best seller, lighter roast, rich taste and medium acidity
Nantucket Blend - Exotic blend, full-bodied with a hint of floral and fruit, bright acidity and complex flavor
Dark Magic - An extra bold dark roast specially blended and roasted for espresso
Wild Mountain Blueberry - Seasonal flavored coffee that has become one of Green Mountain's most popular coffees ever
